Zbrush 4r7 bThis year’s ZBrush Summit gave people’s Twitter feed a little more to look forward to than the latest celebrity news, or the recap of last night’s primetime lineup. Pixologic hosted this 3-day event last month in Los Angeles, California. It streamed live on the Internet for 12 hours a day and featured exclusive content from Disney’s Big Hero movie, Ubisoft Tom Clancy the Division franchise, FarCry 4 and more. 6,000 concurrent viewers watched live as distinguished speakers and companies showcased how they use ZBrush in their respective industries. From rapid prototyping with 3D Systems to television commercials from Nike and Adidas, the event truly showed how ZBrush plays a central role in many design processes.

As technology progresses and amazing design tools like ZBrush become available, it is exciting to see what people are doing with it. For instance, 3D Systems discussed the benefits of digital design and 3D printing during its panel at the ZBrush Summit. Innovation like this was just recently used in a short stop-motion film by director Aron Bothman. His film “Feast In A Fallen City” takes the tradition of stop-motion film-making and fuses it with ZBrush and 3D printing technology. Similarly, huge design studios like Weta Workshop find ZBrush essential to its creature design. Weta is responsible for all the trolls, orcs and miscellaneous creatures we’ve come to love and fear in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit series. Senior Designer at Weta, Andrew Baker, credits the program’s 3D conceptualization tools with allowing the studio to keep character’s looks consistent and completely translatable into 3D merchandise.
