Craft Trailer

Craft Trailer is a passive simulator of a two-wheel trailer. Add more wheels easily with Craft ExtraWheel. Now you can rig any type of trailer in no time! After the dummies have been scaled and aligned to match the real trailer the real parts are simply bound/linked to the corresponding plug-in dummies. Then the hook dummy is bound to Craft 4-Wheeler Extended or any animated object making the trailer follow the object.

In order to save time for animators, Craft Trailer is a semi-physical simulator. This means that Craft Trailer can be driven in the scene, in real time, without having to export any information to an external program. Being a semi-physical simulator, Craft Trailer is equipped to yield some fantastic and imaginative features compared to a fully physical simulation. Drive your car up the face of a cliff or upside down in a loop, and Craft Trailer follows along perfectly. The gravitational direction is related to the driving surface and not to any axis of the scene. Surfaces can even be animated during recording. Or why not animate let the trailer morph in shape and size - all Craft Trailer parameters can be altered in real time during recording.

Examples -

Animate one or more trailers in tandem behind a truck (animated with Craft 4-Wheeler Extended)

- Animate a car with a caravan

- Animate and simulate a modern center-steered tractor together with Craft 4-Wheeler Extended Contact support with any questions you might have.

Technical

The TrailerHookMesh should be bound to the object the Craft Trailer is supposed to follow.

For best results, align the TrailerBodyMesh and the Craft 4-Wheeler Extended in their local z-direction (the forward direction). The TrailerBodyMesh can be scaled to any size and shape but for best results should change position in the y-axis – i.e. higher or lower. When moving the Craft Trailer parts they should initially be moved together. If not, the TrailerBodyMesh must be aligned to the wheels and then change its height above ground to match your Craft Trailer.

By linking the GravityDirectionMesh (located beneath the TrailerBodyMesh) to a surface, the Craft Trailer will automatically use this surface as ground.

The suspension parameters are Stiffness and Damping. Stiffness determines how much force the springs have, while Damping determines how much of the motion is absorbed by the shock absorbers. The Relative Bumper Len determines how long the suspension is relative to the wheel radius. When the suspension reaches this length in a jump Craft Trailer lifts off the ground.

Craft Trailer will be initialized the first time the record button is pressed. Pressing record will set all relative positions and individual scales of the dummies. Press the re-initialize button in the configuration dialogue to re-initialize the parts. If the recording is only successful up to a certain frame, it can be stopped, rewound and restarted at any given point. The transition will be seamless.

Important

If you run two or more plug-ins simultaneously (by ctrl-selecting them in the plug-in list) the plug-in dummy that the hook is linked to must be created first, otherwise there will be a slight lag as if a spring is attached to the hook. Create the Craft 4-Wheeler Extended first, and then create the Craft Trailer. Now link the hook to the car. Select Craft 4-Wheeler Extended and Craft Trailer in the plug-in list and then press record.
