Autodesk has announced the second release of AutoCAD for the Mac.  AutoCAD 2012 is designed to natively support the new OSX 10.7 Lion from Apple.  In addition to the robust feature set from last year’s 2011 product, Autodesk has added several new enhancements.  AutoCAD 2012 offers new features to improve usability, documentation, design, communication, and licensing.  Major new attributes include auto-complete command entry, multi-function grips, associative array functionality, creating previews, and PDF export capability. The new version also offers network licensing.

Autodesk has also expanded its AutoCAD portfolio for the Mac to include versions of AutoCAD LT and AutoCAD WS, the review and collaboration application. AutoCAD LT for the Mac will be available exclusively through the Mac App Store.  AutoCAD WS has been available as a mobile app since last year, but the new version offers desktop functionality on the Mac for the first time, enabling people who don’t own AutoCAD to read and edit files created by the program.

Autodesk has just released a new iPad app, 123D Sculpt.  I downloaded this free app last night and handed it to my son to try out.  The app allowed him to sculpt and paint by choosing a basic shape from the library of creatures, geometry and objects.  He would then push, pull, pinch, flatten and paint to customize his sculpture.  While not to be confused with the detailed functionality of Mudbox (part of the Entertainment Creation Suite), the product’s concept did remind me of the technology involved in digital sculpting.

The classroom license of AutoCAD 2012 for the Mac will be available soon from Studica.
