Seventeen Unity-made games and apps were featured in Apple’s App Store USA Best of 2012 list. These games represented many categories including Casual Games, Best New Ways to Play and Best Showpiece Games. Unity’s game engine is the most popular among mobile game developers, and for good reason. The iPad game of the year, The Room, by Fireproof Games, captivated the attention of puzzle-loving people, young and old.  Specifically, the young (my son) and the old (me)… well, not quite so old.

The roomWe bought the game over the Christmas break, on a cold, snowy night that inevitably kept us inside. Family time has taken on new meanings in the digital age. My son and I sat on the couch and spent hours looking for clues, deciphering cryptic symbols and progressing to solve the puzzle of what was hidden inside a large safe in the room.  The game itself is very clever, beautifully designed with incredibly detailed graphics that look phenomenal on the high resolution iPad screen.

Fireproof Studios is a small art outsourcing team, based in the UK. The Room originated with a few individuals working on art/design and coding. Gradually, additional talent was added to the development process, with Unity chosen as the prototyping environment.  The team also used several plug-ins from the Unity Asset Store, which greatly reduced the development time.  Future creative minds and developers in middle/high school, and in Higher Education, can bring their inspirations to life, with the Unity game development environment.

Check out this great game, created with Unity software.
