3d printing ornament SnowflakeWe’ve discussed 3d printing before, the process of creating digital models (such as those created with 3ds Max or other 3D modeling software) and turning them into a three-dimensional solid object using a process of successive layers. But it’s the holiday season, let’s talk about all the fun items you can make with your 3d printer for a more festive (& creative holiday). The first things that may pop into your head are toys you can make or cute decorations for the home or office but here are some other ideas you may enjoy.

How about designing your own ornaments? It’s the time of year for decorating trees and running off to the Hallmark store to buy ornaments for your loved ones. You can custom design the perfect ornament and then use your Cube(or the 3d printer of your choice) to create a unique and personalized gift. For inspiration, check out this article that shows some awesome ornaments that have been created. I think the clever advent calendar may be my favorite. It's an art that is catching on, Makerbot and Thingiverse recently held an ornament challenge. Entrants came up with snowflakes, snowmen, squirrels, tiny reindeer, toy soldiers and much more. Take a look and get the instructions and files needed to create your own.

Love to bake cut-out Christmas, Hanakkah, Kwanzaa or other holiday cookies? How about printing your own cookie cutters? It’s easier than you think. Cookie Caster is a site that allows you to draw your own custom cookie cutter and download the file to 3d print it. It really makes creating a 3D model of your design easy. Try it, it is a lot of fun. If you don’t want spend the time making your own, that’s okay. You can still browse hundreds of cookie cutter designs and download the files so you can print them on your own 3D printer. Hope this gives you some inspiration. Happy Holidays!
