Course 1 - Siemens Engineering Design

Perfect introductory curriculum for middle, high school and maker spaces, this course challenges students to work in teams to solve complex design problems. Students research, design, develop, and communicate design solutions Teams use engineering software to prepare and evaluate designs and make extensive use of 3D printing to prepare models for presentation to authentic audiences. The goal of the course is the application of the tools to address unique problems allowing the students to rapidly create and analyze proposed solutions. Siemens’ software and hardware are tools frequently used by industry and understanding how these tools are used in problem solving is critical.

Siemens Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) is providing this course at no cost for the curriculum, no cost for the Siemens Solid Edge design software, and no cost for the “Siemens online academy”.

The framework for the curriculum was created by Tom White, Dick Blais, and Terry Nagy with the intent of empowering students to develop their own solutions to the problem presented in each project. The use of project/problem based learning is the best approach to prepare students for what careers will demand in the future.  There is less emphasis on the mastery of procedures and more expectation for original thinking, collaboration among team members, and innovation by students. It’s good when there is more than one right answer.

The course can be used as a stand-alone full year course or taught in a semester double period block schedule.  It is a great foundation to the SREB Advanced Career program or any other similar type program.

Attributes of the new Siemens Engineering Design course:

    Obtaining Free Software

Siemens is making Solid Edge available to schools at no charge. Solid Edge is a portfolio of affordable, easy-to-use software tools that address all aspects of the product development process 3D design, simulation, manufacturing, data management and more, thanks to a growing ecosystem of apps. Solid Edge combines the speed and simplicity of direct modeling with the flexibility and control of parametric design – made possible with synchronous technology. Solid Edge is technically robust, 3D CAD software and the premier design-centric solution in the CAD industry today. It allows for rapid design and testing of a digital prototype. This saves time and materials for students as they can make decisions and refine designs before construction of an actual prototype.

Schools must register for the software at:

Fill out the registration form found on the page. The schools information is entered into the database and a link automatically generates a link for the software download. This arrives within minutes to the contact listed on the application by email. The software is then available for download. The school may install the software on as many computers as needed by the school and has a permanent license built into the installation that never expires.

Students can download a copy for their home computers. Instructors should provide the students with this link.
