Two turn tables and… a Rubens Tube? What?

Watch how the dudes at Waterloo Labs visualized their Karaoke skills with fire using a device known as the Rubens Tube, a myDAQ, and LabVIEW Software.

The Ruben’s Tube is basically a pipe with little holes a drilled through along the top where propane leaks out. Propane is fed in to the tube and then emits from through the drilled holes. The gas is then ignited producing a row of flames. A speaker is then attached to the other end to emit sound waves in to the pipe.

The Karaoke set up is made of 3  NI MyDAQ’s,  two being used for audio in and out and the third inputs the song to be played and outputs the music to the speaker attached to the Ruben’s Tube. The myDAQ’s then connect to the computer via USB to display the sound waves and frequencies. The LabVIEW code and build instructions are available, along with a more detailed description of how it works. If you need to get a MyDAQ or LabVIEW Software Studica offers them at Education Discounts.
