Introducing the Studica Robotics Building System

The Studica Robotics Building System offers everything you need to create big and sturdy robots of your own design. This system is ideal for the classroom, robotics teams, homeschoolers, hobbyists, enthusiasts, and anyone who wants to make their build ideas come to life. It features an affordable robotics build platform using a variety of structural and motion components. All of the components easily work together so you can create a variety of designs without needing a machine shop or special equipment. The unique hole pattern also allows for compatibility with many existing build systems.

Studica Robotics Under SideChoose individual elements from the various components to get started or pick a complete system using the VMX Robotics Controller a reliable, real-time Robotics Controller or Vision/Motion Processor with embedded IMU & CAN-bus interface.  The VMX can perform both real-time robotic control and higher-layer Robot Position Tracking, Drivetrain path-planning, and kinematics-based control. WPI Library Robot Programming support on the VMX Robotics Controller allows FRC-compatible robots to be developed using the same tools and libraries in C++ and Java that are used with FIRST FRC Competition Robots.

Let’s take a closer look at the components available for electronics, motion, and structure. We will also discuss the robotics resources, kits, accessories, and tools available.

The VMX Robotics Controller

The VMX Robotics Controller is the heart of an intelligent robot, and includes software libraries, example code and many more features. The controller can currently be programmed in C++ and Java with future support in development for additional languages such as Python and ROS. The VMX offers a multitude of modern digital communications interfaces and with a Linux-based operating system, users can directly access most modern devices (things like Intel RealSense tracking, LIDAR, and depth cameras).

VMX Robotics ControllerOur VMX controller also integrates with the navX, a second-generation 9-axis inertial/magnetic sensor and motion processor.  The Linux based controller provides a good amount of memory, processing power, Gigabit Ethernet, USB3 ports, and built-in Wi-Fi/Bluetooth. It also offers This controller is easy to use and provides 30 digital interface channels, 4 analog interface channels, and synchronization support.

VMX also makes a great Vision/Motion Coprocessor, especially when combined with the VMX-rtk Robotics Toolkit and the VMX CAN Bus connectivity provides an easy way to monitor a robot CAN Bus.

There are also a variety of sensors to choose from including the sharp IR range sensor, ultrasonic distance sensor, and a Cobra line follower sensor. Plus, you’ll find power jacks, cables, battery packs, and breakout boards.

Key Components -Motion

Maverick DC Gear Motor: This strong 12V DC Gear Motor was designed for strength to endure competitions and features a 61:1 gearbox and integrated Encoder with cable. It provides a stall torque of 65 min. kgf-cm (902 oz-in). It is suited for a wide variety of robotics creations.

Studica Robotics Motion ComponentsMulti-Mode Smart Servo Motor: The Multi-Mode Smart Servo features an ultra-stout steel gear train to provide more torque. This angular programmable Servo can fill a variety of roles on your robot or project. In the default mode, the servo can rotate 300 degrees while having positioning feedback. In this mode, the PWM signal will determine the position of the servo. Using the Smart Robot Servo Programmer (sold separately) the Multi-mode Smart Servo can be configured to run in continuous, standard, and custom angular mode. In continuous rotation mode, the servo will have proportional speed control based on the PWM signal that you send with your servo controller.

Wheels: A mix of wheel options provides you with multiple design options. The Omni-Directional or Mecanum Wheels are great for quick, lateral movements. These wheels feature multiple hub options for use with all types of motors. If you need more grip, the low profile terrain tire offers great pushing ability and is designed for optimal grip on soft surfaces.

Structural Elements

Studica Robotics Structural ElementsThere are two types of channel components available Low Profile Series Channel and U Series channel. The unique design pattern makes it easy to connect the structure, sprockets, motors, and gears. A large center hole makes it possible to integrate flange bearings to provide the ultimate support of shafts and motors.

There are also a large variety of beams, flats, and brackets to allow you to build at multiple angles for unique chassis and mechanism. A multitude of mounting options for servos and DC motors mounts are available as well as gears, sprockets, pulleys, and chain.

Pack Options Available

There are a variety of bundle options available. These include an Expansion Kit and the Shaft and Spacer Bundle. There are many pack offerings to choose from including the motor pack, servo pack, gear pack, and many more.
