Programming in elementary school

The new “Starter Set for micro:bit” by fischertechnik is a great method for teaching students in grade 3 and above the basic principles of programming with single board micro:bit computers. The set includes the fischertechnik parts needed for building three stationary models, and the new fischertechnik “micro:bit IO F5 adapter”. This adapter board features 8 outputs and 6 inputs. It can be used to control the three simple and easy to understand simulation models (a pedestrian light, an automated hand dryer, and an automated parking barrier) equipped with actuators and sensors using the “micro:bit” board. The additional teaching and activity materials, available for free download on the fischertechnik eLearning Portal, provide direction on getting started with the models, as well as performing various informative tasks.

The fischertechnik Factory Simulation model combines four models --Vacuum Gripper Robot, Automated High Bay Warehouse, Multi-Processing Station with Oven, and the Sorting Line with Color Detection--into one self-contained material cycle.

Workpieces are retrieved from the Automated High Bay Warehouse using the Vacuum Gripper Robot, and then moved to the Multi-Processing Station with Oven. After the work-piece has been processed by this machine, it is then sorted by color in the Sorting Line with Color Detection, before being again moved by the Vacuum Gripper Robot to the Automated High Bay Warehouse for storage. This fully assembled factory simulation training model is ideal for use with PLCs (Programable Logic Controllers) and PLC programming software.

fischertechnik Introduction to STEM II is a more in-depth introduction to technology and robotics. This set uses everyday technology and invites students to construct 12 easy-to-understand models. Students are offered a foundation in STEM concepts with a focus on computer science. Based on the easy-to-use ROBO Pro Light software, this set introduces programming activities and incorporates robotics as a catalyst for interactive learning. Through building a model, students will experience hands-on applications of programming and see how it translates to the physical world. Engage students with hands-on activities that will help them develop an interest and aptitude in computer science and other STEM subjects. This education set is recommended for grades 3-5, and includes standards-based curriculum.
